"Mentoring" can be described as a process or an activity for the informal transfer of knowledge, guidance and support from a "mentor", or more experienced person, to a "recipient", or less knowledgeable person. The "mentor" may be older or younger than the "recipient" (the person being "mentored"), but he or she must have a certain area of expertise.
"Mentoring" is a learning and development partnership between someone with vast experience (the mentor) and someone who wants to learn (the recepient). "Mentoring" is similar in meaning to "coaching," but usually is more informal than coaching. "Mentoring" has existed since at least Ancient-Greek times. The word "mentor" was mentioned in the ancient Greek poem Odyssey and meant "wise advisor." It referred to a loyal advisor of Odysseus (a Greek king) who was entrusted with the care and education of Telemachus, son of Odysseus.
